Bid for bedsit complex to house 60 people rejected

Plans to turn a religious retreat into a 30-room bedsit property for up to 60 people have been rejected by councillors.

Preston City Council turned down the bid to convert the former Xaverian Mission Spirituality Centre on Sharoe Green Lane, Fulwood, amid concerns about the impact on neighbours.

More than 50 people objected to the plans for the so-called house in multiple occupation over anti-social behaviour fears.

Sapphire Properties' investment director Mick Patel claimed he had spent nearly £2m on the development and would now appeal.

The council planning committee also heard concerns that up to 60 people would have had to share five kitchens.

But Mr Patel said after the decision "I don't know what else you could do with the property."
