A road is set to be closed until the end of July in order to upgrade gas pipes.

South Street in Crewkerne was shut on Monday morning, between the Blacknell Industrial Estate and Kitt Hill, to allow Wales & West Utilities to begin the work.

It is part of an ongoing programme to upgrade 1,500m of gas pipes in the centre of the town.

South Street will be closed for 10 weeks, until 31 July, while the project as a whole is scheduled to be completed by the end of September.

Wales & West Utilities said the "essential" work had been "progressing well".

Roxanne Whittaker, who is managing the project, said: "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

"We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum."
