A 25-year-old man has died following a crash on the main road to Sumburgh Airport in Shetland.

The accident, involving a Toyota Hilux, happened on the A970 near Sandwick at about 01:00.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said appliances from Sandwick and Sumburgh were sent to the scene.

Sumburgh Airport said it would open later than normal, and advised passengers to check with their airline for flight updates.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Insp Donnie MacKinnon, of Police Scotland, said: "Inquiries are at a very early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the man who died.

“We would appeal for any motorists who were on the A970 around the time of the collision, particularly with dash-cam footage, to please get in touch with any information which could be of significance."
