While Sportspark is due to reopen, the University of East Anglia says the gym inside it will remain closed

The sports centre where a university student died while exercising is due to be reopened on Saturday, but its gym remains closed.

Sportspark, at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, was shut on Wednesday following a medical incident at about 19:00 BST.

The Norwich Medical School student, a man in his 20s named locally as Mohammed Farraj, died in the centre's gym, Norfolk Police said.

"The thoughts of all in the UEA community are with the student’s family and friends," the university said in an update, adding the gym would remain shut until further notice.

The university said support was being provided "to all those affected" and that it was helping the authorities with their inquiries.

'Shocked and heartbroken'

Norfolk Police said it was jointly investigating the incident with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

"The gym will remain closed while inquiries are carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious," the force added.

Medicine student Molly Walker said her peers were "really upset" about the incident

The UEA Students' Union said it was "deeply shocked and heartbroken" following Mr Farraj's death.

"It’s awful, they were so young and they clearly had a bright future coming here so it’s just tragic," first-year student Molly Walker told the BBC.

"Everyone’s just really upset by it, it’s not a nice thing to have happened on our campus."

The HSE confirmed it was making "initial inquiries" and assisting the police investigation.
