A union representing workers at a helicopter manufacturer has said they are becoming "increasingly anxious" over a long-awaited government contract.

Unite has called on the UK government to end months of uncertainty over a £1bn helicopter contract.

Earlier this year it was confirmed that Leonardo, which has a large site in Yeovil, Somerset, was the sole bidder for a new helicopter contract.

The Ministry of Defence said a contract award was anticipated in 2025.

Unite said the contract was "crucial for the future of the factory in Yeovil" where 2,800 people work.

'Disastrous consequences'

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said she met Defence Secretary John Healey recently to seek assurances.

"These are highly skilled workers and a further delay in awarding this contract would have disastrous consequences for the long-term future of this factory," said Ms Graham.

Ben Clarke, union convenor at Leonardo Helicopters in Yeovil, said: "This site isn't just a workplace - it's a legacy of innovation and craftsmanship.

"We need the government to recognise that sustaining this legacy is vital for our national interests, both economically and strategically."

On 26 November Maria Eagle MP, Minister for Defence Procurement, told Parliament: "The New Medium Helicopter competition remains sensitive and the evaluation and approval process must complete before further details, including aircraft numbers, can be confirmed.

"The Ministry of Defence is continuing with the established procurement process, managed by Defence Equipment and Support, and the proposal will be evaluated through 2025 when, subject to government approvals, a contract award is anticipated."
