Man charged over fatal stabbing in Spain - inquest

A man has been charged with murder over the fatal stabbing of a British man in Spain, an inquest has heard.

Nikki Robinson, from Hucknall in Nottinghamshire, was attacked outside the Oxygen nightclub in Calella, near Barcelona, on 21 June and died at the scene.

An inquest at Nottingham Coroner's Court on Monday heard the 30-year-old, who worked making paddocks for Formula 1 VIP areas, died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Deborah Robinson said she was determined to "get justice" for her son.

The court heard Mr Robinson was in the area with work for the Spanish Grand Prix, and had been due to return home on 26 June.

He and a group of colleagues had been given money by their employer for a night out, and made their way to the nightclub after visiting a steak restaurant.

Mr Robinson was attacked after leaving the club, the court heard.

Mairin Casey, senior coroner for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, said the authorities in Spain confirmed a man had been charged over the death.

She said "limited" information had been shared due to ongoing legal proceedings.

"I'm unable to say what the circumstances [around] the death were, but I'm hopeful that that will be explored fully in the criminal trial in Spain," she said.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death, and Ms Casey said the lack of defensive injuries suggests "that this was a very sudden attack".

"It's likely that he just didn't anticipate it," she said.

Ms Robinson has hired a Spanish lawyer to assist her during the criminal proceedings, the inquest heard.

She said her son had loved to travel, especially with his dog Bulla, and that his job had "opened his eyes to a new world".

"He was so excited about the future," she said.

"He was trying to better his life."

After the hearing, Ms Robinson said: "It seems like it was just yesterday.

"Somehow I wake up every morning and we're five months down the line, but I don't know how I've got from there to here."
