Claremont House could become housing for eight students

A former Lake District guest house could be turned into student accommodation if plans are approved.

The landlord has submitted a planning application to convert Claremont House in Compston Road, Ambleside, into an eight-bedroom house of multiple occupancy (HMO).

The redevelopment has been proposed by Ambleside Lettings Ltd which said the rooms would be of a "high-quality" and contain en-suite bathrooms and kitchenettes.

The application said the new rooms would help meet demand for student accommodation in Ambleside, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

"I work closely with [The University of Cumbria] and was recently invited to attend the housing fair at the university," the applicant wrote.

"The huge number of inquiries I received for my existing student let highlighted to me the need for more student accommodation in the area."

He said the HMO would also provide accommodation to people on low incomes and would be "best placed to respond to the changing needs of the town and community over the coming years".

The application is under consideration by the Lake District National Park Authority.
