Town's £7m heritage renovations 'progressing well'

The multi-million pound work to transform a Derbyshire town's heritage halls is making "good progress", according to the authority behind it.

High Peak Borough Council started the rejuvenation of Glossop's Town Hall, Market Hall and Municipal Buildings in October 2022, aiming to restore them to "full public use".

The £7m scheme is being funded by the council and a £2m grant from the government.

Council leader, Councillor Anthony McKeown, said: "We're making great progress, the work in the market hall is now very nearly complete which is a big milestone."

The council said the project will create jobs and new spaces for community use, entrepreneurs and micro-businesses.

It said it will also help introduce energy-saving technologies and fibre broadband to the town's heritage buildings.

McKeown said despite making progress on the market hall, the programme at the town hall is "taking a little longer".

"It's important that we spend the time now to get the right result when we re-open the buildings next year.

"What I can promise everyone is that it will be well worth the wait."

Deputy leader, Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, said: "The market hall is looking absolutely fantastic, we're delighted with it and really pleased to be able to share a glimpse so people can see what they have to look forward to."
