Safe space scheme to protect people who feel threatened

People who feel in danger will be able to use safe spaces in shops in Nottinghamshire as part of a new scheme.

Rushcliffe Borough Council said it is signing up businesses in its area to introduce places for people to seek help if they feel threatened.

The authority is working with Nottinghamshire Police and West Bridgford Shop Watch on Operation Portum, which will provide help for customers, employees and members of the public.

Co-op in Trent Boulevard, Marks & Spencer in Albert Road and West Bridgford Library are among seven businesses already signed up.

Rob Inglis, cabinet portfolio holder for environment and safety at the authority, said: "The scheme is primarily focused on the safety of women and girls and offers a safe space for anyone seeking refuge from fear or vulnerability.

“As well as offering a safe place for anyone to wait in, many stores also offer additional support, making available a room and telephone so that domestic abuse services can be contacted, confidentially and safely."
