The Covered Market in Oxford celebrated 250 years in 2024

A council has proposed allocating a further £1m to "futureproof" a historic indoor market.

Oxford City Council said the suggested funding would bring the total investment in the Covered Market's redevelopment to almost £8m.

The attraction celebrated its 250th anniversary last year, and the council said it wanted to ensure it remained a "vibrant and sustainable hub for independent businesses".

Councillor Alex Hollingsworth said: "We're preserving its historic charm while creating a space that meets the needs of our community."

The money would help upgrade drainage and electrics, remove redundant fittings, as well as improve lighting and accessibility.

The revamp would include a new public square and seating area, and improved entrances on Market Street and High Street, the council said.

If the plans are approved work will commence in late 2026

Mr Hollingsworth said: "Throughout its long history, Oxford's Covered Market has gone through transformations to ensure its continued relevance and character.

"This additional funding will enable another of those historic milestones, shaping the Market for future generations."

"We understand there will be concerns about disruption, so we will work closely with tenants and stakeholders throughout the process to keep them informed and involved."

The additional funding will be decided a cabinet meeting on 5 February, and is conditional on approval of the council budget at the full council meeting.

If approved, detailed designs and planning applications will begin later this year.

Work would then commence in late 2026, with the market expected to remain open throughout.
