Teen left stab victim brain damaged - court told
A 17-year-old boy who inflicted life-threatening injuries on a teenager during a stabbing has been sentenced to five years and four months in detention.
Faaris Khalid attacked the 15-year-old during a violent confrontation in Grosvenor Park in Bradford in March 2023.
The victim suffered a collapsed lung during the attack and was later diagnosed with brain damage as a result of oxygen deprivation.
On Tuesday, the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Rose, lifted reporting restrictions to allow Khalid to be named by the media.
Bradford Crown Court was told the victim had suffered flashbacks of the attack as well as problems with speech, memory, mobility, concentration and seizures.
Khalid, who had no previous convictions, was originally charged with attempted murder over the incident, but part-way through his trial in October 2023 his guilty pleas to wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article were accepted by the prosecution.
The court heard how after the stabbing Khalid had disposed of his clothing, the knife and phone before going home and shaving his head in a bid to alter his appearance.
Khalid also admitted further offences of unlawful wounding, robbery, possessing a bladed article, possessing prohibited firearms, possession of ammunition without a firearms certificate and possession of cannabis.
Supt Al Weekes, of West Yorkshire Police said: "It was only through rapid medical intervention that the victim survived, the consequences could have been much worse.
"I would like to thank those witnesses that did come forward after the incident and urge the community to provide us with information about those who continue to carry weapons and participate in crime so that we can intervene to keep their children safe.
"I hope the sentence gives some comfort and justice to the victim in what has been a harrowing and lengthy ordeal over the past two years."
