A lorry was believed to have been reversed into the shop on Thursday morning, police said

Serious damage was caused to a shopfront in a North Yorkshire town when a lorry was reversed into it.

Officers were called to Robinsons Opticians on Newbiggin in Malton at about 07:15 GMT on Thursday after reports an HGV had been backed into the front of the premises, according to North Yorkshire Police.

They remained on scene to divert traffic while the damage was assessed by a structural engineer, a force spokesperson said.

Fire crews also attended and inspected the scene and had since left, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said, while Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics had not attended.

A picture posted on social media showed the shop's window shattered, leaving shards of glass and debris strewn over the footpath.

The brickwork around the window also appeared to have been damaged.
