Money raised by the designated runner would go directly to Guernsey Mind

A Guernsey mental health charity has been allocated a place in the London Marathon for the first time.

Guernsey Mind said the opportunity to have a place in the London marathon, taking place on 26 April 2026, ensured all funds raised by the designated runner would directly benefit the organisation.

Jo Cottel, chief executive of Guernsey Mind, said the charity decided to enter the charity ballot with the hope that it might get a place.

"We were absolutely delighted when we found out we were one of the 500 charities chosen to get a guaranteed place," she said.

'Unique opportunity'

She said there were 1,400 charities registered for the London Marathon that runners could chose to fundraise for.

Previously, funds raised by Guernsey runners selecting Mind would be directed to the national charity.

The allocated place will directly support Guernsey Mind.

Ms Cottell said to maximise this opportunity they were asking the designated runner to commit to raising a minimum of £2,500.

She said: "We aim to raise a significant amount to further our work.

"This unique opportunity includes guaranteed entry to the event, along with comprehensive support, such as a branded running vest and assistance with publicity and fundraising."

Guernsey Mind said there was an application form on its website for people who were interested.

The deadline for submission is 23 May 2025 and would be reviewed anonymously, it added.

The selected runner is due to be announced on 20 June 2025.

Ms Cottell said: "We encourage applications from both experienced and novice marathon runners and will provide support to our selected runner to assist with their training.

"We are excited to offer this opportunity to a local participant to fly the Guernsey flag and represent Guernsey Mind at this prestigious international event."

Ms Cottell said other runners who were keen to support the charity could sign up for their next 10km (6.2 miles) challenge in August.
