'Essential' works on bridge restart

Drivers have been advised to leave more time for their journeys as essential improvement work on a bridge begin again later.

Repairs to the A66 Threlkeld Bridge near Keswick, will see engineers work 24-hours a day to minimise disruption.

The works, which will take place from 20:00 BST on Sunday until midday on Friday, include waterproofing the bridge deck and resurfacing the road.

Temporary two-way traffic lights and a 30mph speed limit either side of the bridge will be in place.

National Highways said it could not provide a "suitable local diversion" because of the location of the bridge.

"We're keeping disruption to a minimum by working 24-hours a day and outside peak visitor times," the agency said, adding the repairs were weather dependant.
