Investigation after bus crashes into bridge

An investigation has been launched into how a double-decker bus crashed into a low railway bridge.

Avon and Somerset Police was called to the bridge in Lower Bristol Road in Twerton, near Bath, shortly before 20:30 BST on Wednesday and closed the road.

Officers re-opened the road at 22:30 BST, and First Bus confirmed no one was injured.

The operator added the bus was "out of service" and travelling towards the depot.

National Rail said the bus was removed by 22:10 BST, and an examiner found no damage to the bridge after an assessment.

A U5 Bath City bus crashed into the bridge during a similar incident in May last year.

A First Bus spokesperson said: "On Wednesday evening we assisted emergency crews and recovery teams following an incident involving one of our buses in Bath.

"We are currently investigating the incident. The bus was out of service at the time, and heading back to our depot, and as such no customers were on board.

"There were no reported injuries.”
