A Greggs store has been targeted in an arson attack just days before it was due to open.

Witnesses said the bakery on an industrial estate in Exhall, near Coventry, turned into an "inferno" at about 20:00 GMT on Friday, with the entire building well alight.

The chain's new site on Longford Road was due to open on Monday, a spokesperson for the firm said.

It is not thought anyone was inside at the time with no reports of any injuries, Warwickshire Police said, confirming the blaze was arson.

It said a search would be made of the building now the fire was out.

In a statement, Greggs said: "We are fully supporting the police with their investigations.

"Thank you to them, and the local fire brigades who worked tirelessly last night to combat the fire."
