People in Guernsey have been invited to decorate their homes, workplaces and vehicles in the run-up to the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day in May.

In previous years, islanders have put up decorations including bunting, a tradition that started during the Covid-19 lockdown, the States said.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, from Education, Sport and Culture, said: "This year, we encourage everyone to think outside of the box, get creative, and perhaps plan community art, floral arrangements, or dress-up days."

The States said there was a bunting template on the Liberation Day website, adding: "All you need are scissors, glue, tape and some Liberation spirit."

People could use recycled materials for flags to make them more sustainable, the States said.

The event on 9 May will mark the island's liberation from occupying German forces at the end of World War Two in 1945.

Aldwell said decorations would also allow older people who lived through the occupation to enjoy the celebrations if they were unable join parish or island-wide events.
