A Liverpool woman threw missiles at police in Southport, and looted a shop. during rioting that erupted after three young girls were murdered in the seaside town last summer.

Merseyside Police said Emma McAteer had travelled from her home in Wavertree to take part in "large-scale violent disorder" in Southport on 30 July.

McAteer, 26, of Pollard Road, was arrested and charged on 27 January this year, and pleaded guilty to violent disorder and burglary at a previous hearing.

She was jailed for two years, four months at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday.

Merseyside Police said McAteer was captured on CCTV throwing three missiles at police officers on Sussex Road

She then pushed through the crowd which had gathered outside Windsor minimart, entered the shop via a broken shutter and stole items from the shelf, which she was seen carrying out of the store.

Det Insp Paula Jones said: "The part she [McAteer] played that day in a community that was in mourning was despicable, and she has now been brought to justice for her disgraceful actions."

The total number of people arrested for disorder in Merseyside during last summer's riots now stands at 171, with 129 charged and 107 sentenced to a combined 210 years and four months in prison.
