River searches are taking place in Leeds city centre after a person was seen in the River Aire on Monday night.

The individual was spotted in the river behind Asda House, Great Wilson Street, at about 23:15 GMT, with police, fire crews and ambulance paramedics sent to the scene.

Initial emergency service searches did not locate the person, West Yorkshire Police said, with work to find them continuing.

The person was wearing a black hooded top with the hood up, skin-tight black trousers and black and white trainers, the force added.

Detectives are working to identify the individual, who was also seen carrying a black backpack, with anyone with information asked to contact police.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews entered the water using sleds to search for the person, with assistance from a police helicopter, but no-one was found in the water.
