'We've saved 50-year-old fireworks display'

A community has stepped in to keep a 50-year-old tradition alive after organisers cancelled an annual fireworks display.

Hull Wyke Round Table had been running the event at Humberdale Farm in Swanland, East Yorkshire, but pulled out last month citing safety concerns and traffic problems.

The event attracts hundreds of people and at its height, more than 5,000 attended.

Freya Butler, 20, chairwoman of Newport Young Farmers (NYF) and among the volunteers who came to the rescue, said it's a really important event that raised a lot of money.

She said: "It's something you look forward to every year, so it was a bit of a shock when we heard it might not go ahead this year.

"I think it's really positive that we finally got it back going again. It's nice to know that it will be happening like normal."

Another volunteer, Rubi Hood, from NYF and Raywell Scouts, said this year's event was "going to be bigger and better than it has ever been".

Organiser David Guest said a lack of volunteers meant the original event had to be cancelled, but he was pleased the community came together to continue it and hoped for good weather on the night.

The fireworks display takes place at 17:30 GMT at Humberdale Farm.
