Young footballers fund Germany tournament
A team of young footballers, who smashed their fundraising target, will travel to Germany this summer to play in a mini tournament.
Frome Town United Football Club's youth squad of 18 players will take part in a mini European football tournament at twin town Murrhardt in July to coincide with Euro 2024.
The under 15s boys team and under 14s girls team members raised around £10,000 through fundraising events, including a trek up Mount Snowdon in Wales, to pay for the trip.
The team's chair Lee Seviour said he is really "proud and pleased" for them.
"They've spent the last few months on a massive fundraising drive," he said.
"We have no idea yet of who we're playing.
"We're likely to play the Frome twinned towns.
"They'll represent our club, represent our town and hopefully do right for everybody."
The teams initially had a fundraising target of £8,000 for the trip but Mr Seviour said they quickly smashed that.
'Absolutely sterling job'
Mr Seviour said Frome's former mayor came up with the idea for the trip last year.
"They'll also go to Stuttgart to see the stadium and go to events.
"It's more about giving them the experience and the two coaches who helped to put this whole thing together have done an absolutely sterling job.
"We're really pleased and proud for them," he added.
