A driver has appeared in court after 30kg (66lb) of cannabis was found in the back of a lorry carrying chicken.

Bulgarian national, Serghei Bacaianov, 41, was arrested at Port of Killingholme, Lincolnshire, after arriving from the Hook of Holland on 4 May.

The drugs had been concealed in a hidden compartment in the lorry.

Mr Bacaianov was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Grimsby Crown Court on 10 June.

The National Crime Agency said the arrest was made as part of an investigation into a suspected crime network based in Northern Ireland.

NCA Belfast Branch Commander David Cunningham said: "The seizure of these drugs and the vehicles used represents a significant disruption to this network's smuggling activities."
