'Devil's Bend' road reopens after wall collapse

A Nottinghamshire road that closed for more than three months after a wall collapse has re-opened.

Town Street in Bramcote initially shut to traffic on 2 April and was due to stay closed for about two weeks for gas work.

But after the wall on the chicane - known locally as Devil's Bend - crumbled, Nottinghamshire County Council warned the closure would be extended into the summer.

After repairs and additional work carried out by National Grid, the road has opened to traffic, the council confirmed.

The road was closed when the ancient wall - which sits in a conservation area - initially collapsed in April.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Investigations into the cause of the collapse were inconclusive.

"It’s been rebuilt with reused stone and brick work and there’s a concrete backing to strengthen the repairs. The concrete is not visible."

The final delay in reopening the road was due to pre-planned repairs to a faulty cable in Town Street.

A highways manager from the county council previously said it made sense to extend the closure instead of having to close it again "a short time later".
