A police station was evacuated and surrounding roads closed after a member of the public handed in a suspected unexploded ordnance device.

The object was handed in to Newport Police Station on the Isle of Wight at about 10:40 GMT.

Newport High Street, Pyle Street, South Street and Quay Street were closed while bomb disposal experts assessed the item.

Island Roads said at 14:40 the cordon had been lifted.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the police station was closed "as a precaution, and to ensure the safety of all staff and members of the public".

It said staff and officers were still "working and operational from alternative locations".
