A man was taken to hospital in a critical condition after being trapped under a fallen tree during Storm Darragh.

The large cedar tree, which fell in Portland Place West, in Leamington Spa, on Saturday also trapped a woman and a young child who managed to get free, said West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS).

A spokesperson said the pair were being cared for by bystanders and suffered only minor injuries, but were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Ambulance and fire crews worked together to free the man, who had suffered serious injuries.

He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital for further emergency care.

WMAS said they received several 999 calls about the incident at 16:55 GMT.

Earlier in the day, at 12:42, ambulance crews were also deployed to Myton Road, in Warwick, were a man suffered "potentially serious injuries" when he was hurt by a fallen tree in a garden.

In the evening, an ambulance responding to a 999 call was itself hit by a falling branch in Welford on Avon, causing its windscreen to crack.

No-one was injured and a second ambulance was assigned to the call, with the first crew returning to base to swap vehicles, WMAS said.
