Fire crews who dealt with a series of large heath and moorland fires on Bodmin Moor over the weekend had a "difficult job", Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service says.

They were called out on Saturday and Sunday night to a series of blazes near Millpool, Temple, Bolventor and Blisland.

The firefighters tackled a majority of the fires by beating them due to issues with accessibility to the areas.

Glen Beale, who works for the service's prevention team, said that battling such fires meant "long nights" and took up a lot of resources.

He said: "It's hard work beating away at the fires; the heat, the smoke.

"We've been seeing these fires overnight, which means long nights.

"We have on-call [retained] firefighters that have done a day's work and then are out all night firefighting. It's long nights and a difficult job."

He added: "We just want to ask people if they have to burn things.

"The impacts are massive on wildlife and, with this prolonged dry weather, the impact on our resources is massive."
