A ban on dogs on a number of bathing beaches in part of West Sussex has come into force.

Dogs are prohibited on stretches of beaches in Bognor Regis, Felpham and Littlehampton until 30 September.

Dog owners who are seen to be walking their dog on beaches with restrictions, or on the promenades off-lead, will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice.

Arun District Council said the restrictions were implemented with the aim of keeping the beaches clean, safe and accessible.

In Bognor Regis, the prohibited area is from Bognor Regis Sailing Club ramp to Gloucester Road, while in Littlehampton it is from the East Pier to Norfolk Road.

In Felpham, the prohibited area is from Canning Road to Felpham Sailing Club.

Dogs must also be kept on a lead when walking on the promenades alongside these areas, the council added.

"Please remember that your dog is your responsibility at all times and that includes picking up their poo," a council spokesperson said.

"Our four-legged friends are welcome on other stretches of our coastline all year round."

There is also a summer restriction on horses, which are not allowed on any beach between 10:00 BST and 18:00 until 30 September.
