Arrest after footballer attacked at amateur game
A woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault after an amateur footballer was attacked during a match.
A 23-year-old Goytre Women's FC player from Newport needed hospital treatment after an attack at Tonyrefail Welfare Ground in Rhondda Cynon Taf at about 16:20 GMT on Sunday.
South Wales Police said a 25-year-old woman from Tonyrefail was arrested on suspicion of assault and was bailed pending further inquiries.
Goytre FC club secretary Simon Ritter said the player was attacked suddenly about about an hour into the match when the team was winning 6-0 and was now recovering at home after a getting a scan in hospital.
"I've been involved in football for 20 years and never heard of anything like this before," he said.
"The assault came out of the blue."
He said the South Wales Football Association was investigating.
"We've never had anything like this on the women's or men's side so it's been a shock for us all," he added.
"She has a heavily bruised face, very swollen and has had to take time off work to recover."
In a statement posted online, Goytre Women's FC said the club was "appalled" by the incident, which prompted the game to be abandoned.
