A disused cinema which was badly damaged in a fire is to be knocked down.

The large blaze broke out at the former Odeon cinema on Dent Road in Hartlepool on 5 October.

Some nearby residents who had to leave their homes, are still in alternative accommodation.

Hartlepool Borough Council said the Grade II listed building was structurally unsafe and beyond repair.

A 15-year-old boy arrested in connection with the fire has been released on bail.

The authority said due to the building's listed status, efforts would be made to "preserve as much of the building's heritage as possible".

Planning permission for the demolition has been granted and is due to begin later this week.

The council also said it hoped residents who had to leave their homes would be able to return soon.

Road closures on Raby Road, Young Street and Dent Street will remain in place while the work is carried out.
