Two police officers and a man they had just detained were taken to hospital after being hit by a vehicle.

On Tuesday at about 16:37 GMT three officers were called to a disturbance in Garners Field, Great Bourton, near Banbury.

There a 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and threats to kill.

Following the arrest an unrelated vehicle hit two of the officers and the suspect. One officer has since been discharged from hospital and the driver of the vehicle was not arrested.

Thames Valley Police said because a member of the public was injured they had made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Det Sgt Matt Richardson said: "This is a truly shocking incident and our thoughts are with all those involved and those close to them.

"We believe a member of the public stopped their vehicle at the scene shortly before the collision took place. If this could be you, please get in touch with us."

He added the police also wanted to hear from anyone who saw a man with a backpack in the area earlier in the day, as well as those who may have dashcam footage of the collision.
