Dementia campaigner and author coming to Guernsey

An author and campaigner on a mission to create a more dementia-inclusive society is set to visit Guernsey next month.
Ian Donaghy, known as Big Ian, has written various books including Dear Dementia: The Laughter and Tears and works to raise dementia awareness, improve care and combat loneliness.
"I want people to walk away feeling more connected, more empowered, and more determined to bring about real change in how we support those living with dementia and their families," he said.
The event has been organised by charity Dementia Friendly Guernsey, which aims to improve the quality of life for those who have dementia.
'Laugh, cry, act'
"Dementia isn't just a medical condition, it's a human one," said Mr Donaghy.
Dr Louise Bennett has worked in dementia care for 20 years and attended one of his talks in the UK.
"No-one has ever made me feel as seen and understood as Ian did. He gets it," she said.
Care home manager Rachel M said Mr Donaghy was a "game changer" in dementia education, adding he had "the rare ability to make you laugh, cry, and act".
The charity's trustee and co-ordinator Julie Bulpitt said it was delighted Mr Donaghy would visit the island to share his "highly acclaimed message".
"Understanding dementia and thinking differently about those with the condition and the support that we can offer, as a whole community, to their families and loved ones goes to the very core of our work in promoting awareness and motivating others to take action," she said.
The author will hold two presentation sessions on the island at the Peninsula Hotel on 4 June; a morning session for professionals and an afternoon session for family members and loved ones.
Those wanting to attend the free event should contact Dementia Friendly Guernsey for tickets.
