A Devon hair training salon that was set up to help vulnerable young people is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Hair At The Academy, in Exeter, supports students with various life experiences - including homelessness, disability and those in the care system.

The academy, which is funded by Devon County Council and offers courses including hair and beauty, said it was the "only one of its kind" in the UK.

Founder Mary Pugsley said the academy worked with a social worker and a counsellor to offer support to pupils.

"We pull them back in with all of the support that they need to get them through their learning qualifications," she said.

Found purpose

Tyler Gray, now a manager at the training salon, attended the academy as a 15-year-old after being expelled from school.

He said he found his purpose after he was referred to the academy.

"I sort of walked around with my head on the floor," he said.

"I lacked a lot of confidence. I didn't really have a purpose."
