Storm Bert causes changes to Christmas festival

The threat of stormy weather over the weekend has caused a Christmas event to change its plans.

Organisers of the Great Grimsby Christmas on Saturday said a stage in the town's St James' Square would not be put up due to Storm Bert.

However, food stalls will still be in the square and other events in Grimsby Minster will also take place.

The Met Office is predicting winds of 40-60mph (65-96km/h) and heavy rain, with yellow weather warnings in place for Saturday and Sunday.

Some music events will be moved inside the Minster. However, the dance performances have been cancelled due to the lack of a stage, the organisers said.

Councillor Hayden Dawkins said: "We have to make sure both visitors and people who are taking part in putting on the celebration are all safe".

“We’d like to thank all of the participants who were due to take part for their work and preparation.

"I know it’s really disappointing not to be able to perform, but we hope you’ll come down and enjoy the day.”

Events start at 11:00 GMT and the day culminates in the switching on of the town's Christmas lights.
