A man has been arrested in connection with the attempted abduction of a three-year-old girl in Wolverhampton.

West Midlands Police received reports that a man tried to pick up and take the girl while she was outside a house on Leicester Street at about 17:15 GMT on Thursday.

He was stopped by the child's mother and is then understood to have left in the direction of Harrow Street.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of attempting to kidnap the girl and was in custody for questioning, police said.

The force said it believed it was an isolated incident and the child was not injured.

Det Insp Nicola Pestel said: "We've had officers from across our local teams working hard on this investigation.

"We've been following a number of lines of enquiry and this arrest is a significant step forward."

Officers are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
