Residents are being encouraged to fly flags in celebration of a village's heritage as part of a history festival.

Stratton, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, will showcase its history during the first Flaggery Day on Saturday.

Villagers are invited to design and display their own flags and visitors can enjoy an art exhibition from the residents of Stratton Court.

“Fly a flag for Stratton outside your home or business and help make Stratton flutter,” said event coordinator Jay Haigh.

While this year’s Flaggery Day is part of Cirencester History Festival, which runs until Sunday, Ms Haigh said she hoped it would become an annual tradition in its own right.

“It’s all about heritage,” she said.

“There’s always something to learn about your home or the area you live in.”

Stratton Court resident and artist Teresa Forrest has designed two large flags for the event and an illustration of the village.

Linda Lloyd, CEO of Stratton Court said: “I look forward to her exhibition, as well as the village trail and all the beautiful tributes to the place we call home.”

The day will feature a variety of activities across the village, with visitors able to enjoy a walking tour to see all the flags and art installations on display.

History trail maps will be available at Stratton School, where students have hung their own banners.
