Empty market site and nearby car park plans updated

Plans for the re-development of sites at the Derbion shopping centre have been updated.

Derbion said proposals for the Eagle Market now includes 500 homes, instead of 875 in a previous proposal, after the layout for the site was revised, including a reduction in height of the proposed buildings.

While nearby Riverside car park site, which closed last year, will be demolished to make space for about 380 new homes, with new public spaces and walkable streets, under the plans.

Proposals for the revamp of the Eagle Quarter, Riverside Quarter, and Bradshaw Way, all at Derbion, will be on display at an exhibition in the shopping centre on Thursday and Friday.

Planning permission has already been granted for the Eastern Gateway project, the first phase of the proposed Eagle Quarter development.

Work is under way to create a new public square in the space.

As well as the 500 new homes, the Eagle Market - which is off East Street at the eastern entrance to the Derbion - will have "commercial uses" and also include "green, accessible routes and new public spaces", sad Derbion.

The Eagle Quarter plans also include keeping Derby Theatre - when the intention was originally to demolish it - to provide a "green cultural square at the heart of the project".

While the proposals for Bradshaw Way Retail Park site includes about 480 new homes and commercial space around landscaped public areas.

Beth McDonald, managing director at Derbion, said: "Our position in the heart of Derby means that we have an important opportunity to evolve and develop our wider footprint to improve the vitality of the city centre and increase connectivity.

"The masterplan proposals are a framework for development over the next 10 years and beyond to revitalise three key sites that will support the wider regeneration of Derby and attract and engage more people to visit and explore the city."

An exhibition of the proposals will be open on Level 2 of Derbion, opposite Zara, on Thursday from 11:00 to 16:00 and Friday 11:00 to 15:00.

Previous plans to create an indoor go-karting track and amusement space inside the former Eagle Market were scrapped earlier this year.
