Police probe uncovers spate of attempted break-ins

A spate of attempted break-ins in a North Yorkshire village has been uncovered during an investigation into one burglary.

Police said the crimes came to light while officers were gathering evidence concerning a break-in which happened overnight between Tuesday 10 December and Wednesday 11 December in Sutton-in Craven.

Requests to review residents' security footage had revealed several attempted burglaries were carried out at other homes in the village, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Officers had since visited about 100 addresses in the area to issue safety advice and local residents were urged to submit CCTV or doorbell footage, a force spokesperson said.

During the break-in which was originally being investigated, thieves stole the homeowner's car keys but did not manage to make off with the vehicle, police said.

Sgt Neil Sisson said: "We've spoken to a large number of residents who are understandably concerned about the recent incidents in their community.

"I'd like to reassure them we're pursuing all lines of inquiry in this investigation and will continue to work closely with the community to ensure people feel and stay safe."
