A toddler required surgery after being bitten in the face by a dog in Ayrshire.

The three-year-old boy was injured when the animal, described as a cream-coloured Staffordshire Bull Terrier, approached him in Leven Place, Irvine at about 18:00 on Thursday.

He was taken to University Hospital Crosshouse in Kilmarnock for surgery after the attack.

Police Scotland said they were keen to trace the dog, after it ran off from the scene, and its owner "as quickly as possible".
