Hundreds take part in Telford Vaisakhi celebrations

Hundreds of Sikhs have taken part in Vaisakhi celebrations in Shropshire.

Events were held over the weekend, including at Hadley Gurdwara in Telford on Saturday.

Sukhdeep Chaudhari attended the festivities at the gurdwara and said it was "very much a family event, a generational event".

Vaisakhi is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar, a day to celebrate 1699 - the year when Sikhism was born as a collective faith.

Ms Chaudhari said: "It's lovely, everybody comes together."

She said that "we're quite a small community in Telford," but added that for special occasions "there'll be hundreds of people coming and going."

Kulninder Kaur Chahal, who is connected with Telford Gurdwara in Priorslee, said her role was to build links with the community.

"We provide warm spaces, lots of groups going on for ladies... yoga classes.

"It's really, really a safe space for young and old to come, mingle and it's a peaceful space."
