Universal claims 92% support for theme park plan

The company behind Universal Studios theme parks said 92% of the 6,000 people surveyed support a new site in the UK.

Universal Destinations & Experiences said the majority of response came from communities near Kempston Hardwick, Bedford, where it bought 476 acres of land.

The company said it had "been delighted by the enthusiasm and overwhelmingly positive responses provided throughout the public engagement period".

It said feedback demonstrated excitement for prospective new jobs and the potential for wider investment in the surrounding area.

The company said: "We are incredibly appreciative of the very warm welcome we received and have been delighted by the enthusiasm and overwhelmingly positive responses provided throughout the public engagement period."

Two public events were held in Bedfordshire where the wider community could learn more information about the proposals.

The firm said about 1,500 people attended those meetings and they would now be assessing the feedback received over the last four weeks.

Of the 6,000 people surveyed only 4% were not supportive with a further 4% being unsure.

In a letter to nearby residents the firm said it had heard concerns about local infrastructure, potential disruption caused during construction, and concerns about noise and the visual impact of the park.

The company explained that discussions with relevant transport authorities, local and national governments will continue to ensure all elements are in place to support the project.

The company said the next step involved conversations with stakeholders to "determine whether we can proceed with this project."
