The death of a pedestrian in her 50s in a crash on a Surrey road in the early hours is being referred to the police watchdog.

Police were called to the incident on the A322 Lightwater bypass between the M3 and the Gordon Boys roundabout shortly after 02:30 BST on Friday.

South East Coast Ambulance Service attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said.

Later, the force said it was making a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

A statement said: "Surrey Police is making a mandatory referral to the IOPC following this incident, which is being treated as death following police contact.

"This is due to reports relating to the individual who sadly died which were received in the hours preceding the collision."

Police, who have appealed for witnesses, said the driver of the car stopped at the scene and has been assisting with enquiries.

Officers are trying to trace the woman's movements before she died.

They are looking for anyone who was travelling along the A322 between midnight and 03:00 or saw a person walking along the side of the southbound carriageway.

The road was closed but has since reopened, police said.

The woman who died has not yet been named.

Police are asking anyone who saw any part of the incident, who has CCTV, dash cam or helmet cam footage that might have captured it, or with any information, to get in touch.
