Water company 'sorry' after sewage spills into road

Southern Water says a sewage spill which saw excrement released into a West Sussex street was caused by a mechanical fault.

The water company apologised after sewage flowed into Albion Street, Southwick, from its nearby pumping station on Saturday.

One resident told the BBC that there was a "stench of drains and faeces" in the area which "stayed with me well after leaving".

Southern Water said it was "very sorry for the disruption and inconvenience to the local community".

A spokesperson for the water company added: “Our team worked overnight to swiftly clean up the sewage overflow, which was caused by a mechanical failure that has now been resolved."

Southern Water said on Saturday that the reoccurring blockage was caused by "unflushables".
