Endurance runner rescued after mountain fall

A runner taking part in a mammoth challenge to run 66 miles (106 km) in 24 hours had to be rescued from a mountainside after slipping and injuring her arm and shoulder.

The woman fell while descending Scafell Pike in the Lake District on Thursday at 13:29 GMT, Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said.

The team said her injury left her unable to move at all.

Rescuers placed her on a vacuum mattress before winching her into a coastguard helicopter which transported her to hospital.

The Wasdale team said the woman had been 42 miles (68 km) into a solo attempt to run up and down 42 Lake District hills in 24 hours.

"We'd like to wish the runner a very swift and full recovery," a spokesperson said.

"Hopefully once recovered she will return to complete the challenge."

The rescue took about four hours and 48 minutes.
