Part of Mountain Road closed for car fire repairs

A section of the main route between the Manx capital and the north of the island is set to remain closed until Tuesday for resurfacing works to repair damage caused by a vehicle fire.

The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) said the vehicle caught fire on Sunday at the exit of the Gooseneck on the A18 Mountain Road.

A spokesman said the incident "caused significant damage to the carriageway" and resurfacing works could only be completed on Tuesday due to forecast heavy rain.

It means a section of the road between Ramsey and the Bungalow will stay closed until the whole of the road reverts to two-way traffic .

The DOI said its paver team was set to plane out both lanes on Monday, with resurfacing due resurfacing on Tuesday ahead of new road markings being applied.

It is expected that Mountain Road will then reopen to two-way traffic, after signage and traffic cones marking out the restrictions have be taken away, at 16:30 BST.
