A petition to save a cinema due to close next year has already had close to 800 signatures in less than a week.

Cineworld said its site at Sixfields Leisure in Weedon Road, Northampton, will cease trading on 19 January.

The petition said it "would take away another important staple of our town".

According to Cineworld, the site is one of six nationwide where the landlords chose to reclaim their properties after the "completion of our restructuring plan".

The petition, started on 13 December, said: "To this day, the cinema and its staff continue to provide a lot of love for a lot of people."

It said the "primary decision makers in its upcoming closure need to hear from those who it will affect most".

A similar petition to the save the Odeon in Kettering was signed by more than 2,000 people, but the council approved its demolition for when it shuts in February.

In July, Cineworld announced five other closures, which included Bedford.

The company said its restructure "protects thousands of jobs across the UK and provides us with the financial stability to continue investing in delivering extraordinary experiences for our valued customers".
