Train line to close again after Storm Bert damage

A train line is set to close again for essential repairs following Storm Bert flooding.

No trains will run between Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria and Lancaster from Tuesday to Friday as urgent works are to be carried out in the Ulverston area.

The line was previously closed from 23 to 25 November after snow melted and overwhelmed the watercourse, flooding the tracks and damaging the earth of the nearby railway cutting.

Network Rail said it was looking to permanently fix the site after about 300 tonnes of soil had to be removed.

Engineers built a 427ft (130m) long "water slide" to divert the watercourse's journey around the cutting which meant repairs could now begin, Network Rail said.

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern, said the operator would do all it could to "get people where they want to be".

A rail replacement bus service will run between the stations during the closure.

The line had originally been scheduled to close from Monday but Network Rail said it had pushed the work back to "keep the railway open for longer".
