People to attend remembrance events across Midlands

Cities and towns across the Midlands are due to mark Remembrance Sunday to reflect on those who have died during wars.

There will be ceremonies at war memorials, museums and other civic locations in the region, on Sunday.

Local leaders will gather in cities like Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent and there will be smaller gatherings in places like Oldbury and Leamington.

Road closures and changes to parking will be in place, with people encouraged to check their local council's website for exact details.

Birmingham’s annual Remembrance Day Service will take place on Colmore Row, opposite St Philip’s Cathedral.

The service will be attended by military veterans and representatives from the armed forces, with the Salvation Army Band due to play at 10:15 GMT.

The city's Christmas market will be closed until 13:00 GMT.

West Midlands Railway said veterans and serving military personnel attending Remembrance services could travel by rail for free.

The operator is also marking the occasion by adding poppies to the side of its new Class 730 electric trains on the Cross City Line through Birmingham.

Hundreds of veterans, serving military personnel, reserves, cadets and other organisations will march through Wolverhampton City Centre.

There will be seven parades across Sandwell’s six boroughs, all of which will include representation from the West Midlands Lieutenancy.

The services will be held at St Margaret’s Church (Great Barr), Oldbury Civic Square, Powke Lane Cemetery (Rowley Regis), Smethwick Council House, Victoria Park (Tipton), Memorial Gardens (Wednesbury) and Dartmouth Park (West Bromwich).

Car parking charges are to be suspended in Dudley, Halesowen and Kingswinford on Remembrance Sunday.

Hundreds are expected to join Worcester’s traditional Remembrance Sunday parade.

Large crowds watch on every year as members of the armed forces and cadets march to the city’s cathedral.

The parade is due to start at 09:15 GMT, making its way via Mealcheapen Street, St Swithun's Street and High Street.

An act of remembrance will be held at the Woodbine Willie Memorial at St John’s Cemetery on McIntyre Road from 11:00 GMT on Saturday.

Commemorations are also taking place in Malvern and Evesham.

In Shrewsbury, the Mayor will lead a civic procession from Shrewsbury Castle led by the Bligny Band and Bugles from Shropshire Army Cadet Force.

The procession will leave the Castle at 10:30 GMT, following the route of Castle Gates, Castle Street, Pride Hill, Mardol Head and St John’s Hill to the Quarry.

A Memorial Service will take place in the Quarry at the War Memorial at 10:50 GMT.

Rolling road closures will be in place between 09:00 GMT and 12:00 GMT, to allow the parade to pass by safely and the town council will live stream proceedings for residents who can't make it.

The Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford will also host a Service of Remembrance to honour members of the armed forces.

The National Memorial Arboretum will host its usual events to honour fallen armed forces personnel and thousands are expected to attend its main service at 10:30 GMT on Sunday.

A two minute silence will be observed at 11:00 GMT and the service will feature performances by Black Voices and British Army Band Catterick.

There will be a separate, ticketed Armistice Day service of remembrance at the arboretum on Saturday to mark the end of World War One in 1918.

People will also gather at the Cenotaph in Kingsway, Stoke-on-Trent, at 10:40 GMT on Sunday, prompting road closures.

People in Coventry are welcome to attend the city's War Memorial Park.

There will be a parade before and after a remembrance service, with a several roads closed for a number of hours.

Events are also planned in Leamington, Warwick, Kenilworth and Whitnash.
