A 13-year-old girl has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash in Coventry.

West Midlands Police officers were called to Radford Road near Barrs Hill School at about 08:10 BST.

The force said the driver was spoken to by officers at the scene and was helping with their investigation.

The crash happened on the same road where 12-year-old Keaton Slater was killed in a hit-and-run a year ago.

Police said the road remained closed in both directions from Light Lane to Fynford Road and advised people to avoid the area.

It added that it was in "close contact" with the girl's family and the nearby school as the investigation continued.

Officers urged anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact the force.

Resident Bill Dales said he was woken up by the sound of sirens on Thursday morning and often heard drivers "flying" down the road in the middle of the night.

"People drive too fast," he added.

Angela Barry, who was in the area shortly after the crash happened, said the crossing near to Barrs Hill School was in her view "quite dangerous" and "more could always be done to improve road safety".

Another resident Kevin Cairns said there needed to speed bumps on Radford Road.

"You can pick up speed and you're outside a school," he said.
