Art display for Mental Health Awareness Week

Artwork has gone on display across a town as part of a special project to highlight mental health.

Threads of Resilience, which looks to allow people receiving mental health support to express themselves through art, took place over a year, organised by Together for Mental Wellbeing, Reading Borough Council and Reading Voluntary Action.

The pieces have gone on display in various locations in the town to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week.

Joseph Silvanos, one of the artists involved in the project, said it was empowering and "an incredible way to get the community together".

"It’s taught me a lot about patience, consistency, resilience," he said.

Farah Taha, another artist involved in the project, said it helped attendees to "find a way to cope with life, and the hardships you face".

The artwork is being displayed at a number of locations including Reading Central Library, the train station and the borough council offices.

The display at the library was attended by Mayor of Reading Tony Page.

"We all have our own sets of responsibilities, but when it comes to addressing those wider community needs such as mental health, working with refugees as well as others, it’s positive to have this collaboration," he said.

Andre Silva, service and oversight project manager at Together for Mental Wellbeing, said he wanted to carry on working with the council to continue the projects.
