A cinema at a seaside resort that has been open for 25 years will screen its final films this evening.

The closure of Cineworld on New Bond Street, Weymouth, will leave the town without a cinema.

It is one of several closing as part of a national restructure by Cineworld - including the cinema at Tower Retail Park, Poole which is set to close on 19 January.

An online petition to try and save the nine-screen cinema attracted 1,069 signatures.

The cinema said its unlimited members had been contacted via email with details about membership cancellations and options to transfer to another Cineworld site.

In a statement, Cineworld Weymouth said: "We would like to thank all of our customers for choosing Cineworld Weymouth as their local cinema."

The nearest Cineworld will be almost 30 miles (48km) away in Yeovil.

Cinemas at Northampton, Castleford in West Yorkshire, Leigh in Greater Manchester, Middlesbrough will also close.

Cineworld said the landlords of the six cinemas closing chose to reclaim their properties.
